Maleng Regional Justice Center in Kent evacuated after bomb threat

Law enforcement evacuated the Maleng Regional Justice Center in Kent town center on Friday afternoon due to a bomb threat.

All King County Superior Court operations were on hold for the remainder of the day, according to a King County Superior Court tweet at around 2:40 p.m. RJC, 401 Fourth Ave. NOT., is closed for the rest of the day.

Kent Police are overseeing the investigation, but the King County Sheriff’s Office is also involved as it is a county building.

“We received a bomb threat in district court,” Sheriff’s Office spokesman Ryan Abbott said in a telephone interview. “We evacuated everyone.

Bomb sniffer dogs from the Port of Seattle’s K-9 explosives detection units swept the building and a clear notice was given around 3:15 p.m., Abbott said.

“It was kind of a vague threat from what I understand,” Abbott said.

Kent Deputy Police Chief Jarod Kasner said officers cleared the scene after no explosives were located at the RJC.

“We cleaned up the stage,” Kasner said.

The bomb threat did not impact the county jail at the western end of the RJC.
